Sometimes “Free” Doesn’t Mean Free

We learned this week that even if FREE is in the title of something it isn’t actually free.  We used Freecreditreport.com to check our credit report and found out that it is actually a dollar to get your credit report.  That’s not the bad part though…after 9 days they take your credit card and start charging you $14.95 per month for a “credit monitoring service.”  So since we had 2 accounts we just flushed $32 down the toilet, that was fun!

BOTTOMLINE: DO NOT USE FREECREDITREPORT.COM.  or cancel it the same day/next day and it will only cost you $1.  Apparently there is a govenrment credit check that is free, if someone could leave a comment with that address I’m sure some readers would appreciate it!

Looking Forward to May

May is going to be a busy and wonderful month and then come June I don’t even know what we will do with the free time we will begin to have.

The first weekend of May Andrew and I both have class Friday afternoon/evening and Saturday morning.  Then I volunteered to work at Bella on Sunday.  So this coming weekend is clearly not that exciting, but it’s necessary and it’s the last weekend Andrew and I will be going to class so that’s worth celebrating!

The second weekend in May I am co-hosting a clothing swap at our church for my leadership project.  It should be a fun afternoon of giving away old clothes and getting “new” clothes.  We’ve done a swap once before and it was tons of fun.

The third weekend Andrew’s parents and little brother will be in town for his graduation.  We are looking forward to taking them to Peoria to show them the town we will be moving to eventually.  We are hoping my family from Texas can make it up for this weekend, but we are looking forward to a great weekend regardless.

The fourth weekend we are taking a little trip home to Massachusetts for Andrew’s brother’s graduation.  We are looking forward to getting away for a few days.  We found a couple fantastic flights out of Bloomington that allow us to leisurely make the trip without having to get up at a horrible hour of the morning.  Those are our kind of flights.  We are hoping to get back to Bloomington early enough to hit up Avanti’s for some pizza bread.

The fifth weekend we have nothing planned so far and I’d be ok with it staying that way.  I did tell Bella I would be available that weekend if need be so I may be working a shift or two, but hopefully we’ll be able to have a wonderful relaxing weekend.

When June arrives we will not only have weekends open, but also have time together Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday….whoa we might actually get sick of each other, I highly doubt it!  I’m sure our schedule will fill up faster than we can even breathe!

He’s Got My Back

So this week has been tough.  I have been mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually challenged: luckily at different times in my day, but to sum up the week so far it’s been tough.  Happily our marriage has been great this week so no worries on that front!

I have been on the hunt for the last several months for a great pair of trouser jeans.  I wanted something dressy and sophisticated and unfortunately with skinny jeans being all the rage a trouser jean is very hard to come by.  I knew Banana Republic would have the style I want, but I struggled with paying $90 for a pair of jeans…that’s not THAT outrageous, but I like to make my clothing budget stretch.  This morning I looked up on our cabinet and lo and behold there was a coupon for 40% off a regular priced item at Banana Republic and it was only good for ONE DAY, today.  So after my meeting this afternoon I headed over in hopes of getting out of there spending about $60.  I found the pair I wanted, they had my size, I tried them on, I loved them and I went up to pay for them.  She rang them up, $68…ouch, but okay.  Then she rang in my coupon chaching, I got $90 jeans for $40.88.  Apparently starting today the jeans were an extra 30% off.  Can you believe that?  I told the girl that this made my day and she was thrilled for me.

When things like this happen I think, “God, could it be true that you are so crazy about me that you would perfectly align events like this in my life when times are tough?”  I’m pretty sure the answer is yes.  I’m super grateful that God reveals himself to me right where I need Him, in Banana Republic of all places.

[FYI: still no luck on the purse!]

BIG BUMMER

I posted awhile back about finally splurging on a faux snakeskin clutch I had been eying for months.  I went back and forth on whether or not to get it, then I used my birthday money and purchased it.  Well it has gone MIA for the last several months and I’m sick of not having it.  I know it has to be in my apartment somewhere because it is empty.  I knew if I posted this I would find it the next day and that is the purpose of the post…I hope to have happy news for you tomorrow!

Great and Sad

I got some great news today and then some sad news…don’t worry for most of you this news will not be sad at all, but for a shopper like myself this news may be devastating!  We’ll start on a positive note:

-I went to Best Buy today to talk about when I could get an early upgrade for my phone.  I currently have a Blackberry and have some major Iphone envy going on.  I knew that my contract would be up for renewal in May of 2011 and I really wanted an Iphone before then.  GUESS what date I can have an early upgrade….October 2, 2010.  That means that for my birthday on October 3rd I will be getting an Iphone, I’m so excited and I just can’t hide it!

-Alright here’s the bad news…New York and Company in our mall is CLOSING!!  That’s right the place where I buy the bulk of my clothes will no longer be 10 minutes away.  Hey I’ll look on the bright side, I can get some cheap clothes over the next few weeks and then I can shop at one when we move to Peoria, and the one there is nicer anyway.

So there you have it, luckily the good news outweighs the bad news…I am going to the “light side” October 2nd 2o10 and I can’t wait!!!

Smelly Memories

I have a great sense of smell and many smells are linked to memories.  Tonight I got into Andrew’s car and was totally taken back to the first time I ever rode in his car.  It was 6 AM on a Thursday morning and we were heading to the gym.  Then I remembered our first date and the night we went to the symphony months later when Andrew decided he was going to marry me.  Then I was reminded of the time we climbed back in the car after picking out my engagement ring and then sitting in the car calling our families to tell them we were getting married.  MMM that car has so many good memories and no matter what kind of air freshner is in there it always has the same basic scent.  I’m sure we will have many more great memories in that car with that scent, I’m so glad it will be ours this week!

All done!

Today, we wrote a check for the final payment on Andrew’s car! In a couple weeks we will have the title, and will own both our cars 100%!! It will be a good chance to start fresh. Since getting married and discussing finances, we agree that we’d like to get into minimal debt, and pay as much as possible with cash. Hopefully we can set aside enough money each month that by the time we need to replace one car, we’ll have the money for one. We have also learned that it makes a lot more sense financially to buy a lightly-used car. Andrew’s car was purchased new, and while it has been a good car and has plenty more miles to go, we could save a big chunk of money on the same car a couple years later, or buy a much nicer 2-year old car for the same amount. At least we haven’t made any major mistakes in our learning process!

A Wonderful Weekend

Andrew and I had a wonderful weekend.  It was actually surprisingly great considering we were both super busy.  Andrew had class Friday afternoon and Saturday morning.  I taught a class Saturday morning and was on for worship for 3 services at church and then I worked 12:30 to 5:00 at Bella.  Here are a few highlights:

1. Friday night Andrew went for drinks with some friends from class so I was able to get dolled up without him being home…this is my favorite because it feels like we are actually going on a real date.

2.  We went to Jupiter’s and they messed up our food so they had to remake it.  This resulted in us waiting an hour longer than expected, but a FREE MEAL.  Yeah that was pretty sweet that date night was free.  And the extended time of us sitting there caused us to talk more and we actually had some good conversations.

3.  Due to date night being so cheap we decided we could spend that money and go on another date on Saturday afternoon, yep that’s right 2 dates in 1 weekend…heaven!

4.  We went to my old high school for me to participate in the dedication of the Aldridge Auditorium and it was delightful to be a part of it.

5.  We went out for our friend’s 21st birthday and the party started at 11:45, usually we are getting to bed by then, but we thought hey, why not.  We ended up having a great time and staying out past 1AM.  As we were walking to our car I turned to Andrew and said, “Man I feel young again and I love it.”  I think we are going to try to do this more often.

6.  Baptism Sunday is one of my favorites and that’s what we had today and I had a front row seat.  After service I went to work and had a great time with all the ladies.

7.  When I got home Andrew was at the grocery store getting dinner so I got to do some chores to get ready for the week.  After dinner we took a walk and then came home and started watching…you guessed it…LOST!

8. I fell in love all over again this weekend.  I never fell out of love with Andrew, but this weekend my heart grew bigger for him.  I’m not even really sure why, but it feels really nice.  I feel like Will Ferrel on Elf when he runs into his dad’s office and says, “I’m in love, I’m in love and I don’t care who knows it!”  What a difference a weekend can make.

I truly hope that your weekend was rejuvenating…back to reality tomorrow!

Random Thoughts from Laura’s Head

-The Snooze button is the worst/best invention in the World.  I snoozed for an hour the other day and it was pure bliss.  Luckily I married a snoozer too so he typically doesn’t get annoyed with how often my alarm goes off.

-I love white pants, I bought another pair the other day….slightly different than all my other pairs, I told Andrew to cut me off.

-I’m going to try to take a walk or jog everyday that it’s nice outside…so far so good this week, it feels nice to get out!

-This spring has started off much nicer than usual

-I’m frustrated that my CD player in my car isn’t playing CD’s right now, however I have had it since I turned 16 over 8 years ago so I can’t complain really

-I love surprises and I LOVE surprising people, we got to have a surprise party for a friend the other day and it was fabulous

– Because of my jobs, friends, and family I will only be responsible for one meal this week at home AND I made two meat loafs last time I made it so our dinner is thawing out on our counter right now!

-This spring it is my goal to have fresh flowers on our dining room table every week.  Right now we have white and yellow daisies in miniature milk bottles.  Next week I’ll be looking for Dahlias to put in some new vases I’m going to buy today : )

– I worked at the new Bella located on Neil near Kirby the other day and I had so much fun, if you haven’t checked it out yet you should it’s quite the destination.

-Confession…I ate a brownie for breakfast today

– I took some clothes to Karen’s Closet thinking they might take 1 or 2 pieces of the 11 things I took and they took ALL of them…hoping to have a little spending money in the next couple weeks!

Hope you are having a wonderful Wednesday…sorry if I bored you to tears!

We’re Sorta Lame, Sorta

So tonight we are supposed to be venturing out and going somewhere for date night that we don’t typically go to.  What I mean by supposed to be is that we are not going any where new.  Instead we are going to Houlihan’s because we know we like it and I’m craving their tortilla soup.  Andrew says this is not lame it just means we know what we like and we want dinner to meet our expectation.  So we will be heading out in the next ten minutes to go to a wonderfully predictable dinner.  We were thinking about going tp Carmon’s Creperie.   Has anyone been there and have  a review…maybe we will venture there next week!
